M2D2 “Toiling almost day and night” Slavery and Servitude in British North America

Q This discussion addresses the following outcomes: • Compare and contrast the institutions of African slavery and indentured servitude and explain the origins and growth of slavery in the British North American colonies (CO#1, CO#5, CO#6/Gen. Ed. Outcome 4.2) Britain was not unique in the use of the transatlantic slave trade to acquire laborers in its colonies, but the institution of African slavery in the North American colonies took on several particular expressions. African slavery emerged from earlier forms of forced labor, but with a few decades had become very influential in shaping colonial economic development. While not all colonies were slave societies (reliant upon slave labor for economic production and/or with a high percentage of enslaved people), many colonies, north and south, adopted similar policies regarding slavery and race. Through the institution of slavery, race relations took on a particular form which deeply impacted the history of the colonies and the independent United States. Before beginning this discussion, make sure to read the Module Notes, Chapter 3: “British North America (Links to an external site.)” and sections I-IV of Chapter 4: “Colonial Society (Links to an external site.)” in The American Yawp and the following primary sources: Virginia Slave Laws (Links to an external site.) Then view the following short video clip: Colonial Slave Trade (Links to an external site.) Using the primary and secondary source materials above as evidence, consider the following in a post of at least 250 words: • How did the treatment of African slaves differ from the treatment of whites who worked in the indenture system? • What factors contributed to the growth of the institution of African slavery over indentured servitude as the chief labor source in British North America? Then, over the course of the week, respond to the posts of at least two of your classmates. Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59PM. Your responses are due by Sunday at 11:59PM. Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. A labor form where a person agrees to work without salary for a specific number of years through a contract for eventual compensation or debt repayment. In historical times this system was used to pay for apprenticeships, typically when an apprentice agreed to work for free for a master to learn. Indentured servants were frequently especially on the Southern plantations during planting and harvesting season. The treatment of enslaved people in the United States varied by time and place but it was brutal. Any African enslaved person cannot witness against a white rather sometimes they need to whip other enslaved people even family members(Price, n.d.).
